«The film is about Gulu Primary school, which has been untouched, full of innocence and purity. As material and contact from the outside world rushed into this small utopia, all sides of universal human nature are shown: selfishness, materialism, envy, competition … However, everybody just hopes tomorrow will be better.» (Xu Hongjie)

Xu Hongjie Born 1969 in Dalian Wafangdian, Liaoning province, China. Studied Civil Engineering in China and worked as engineer. She studied German in Germany and later Theatre, Film and Television at the University of Cologne, where she made several short films. On the Rim of the Sky is her first feature-length film.

«We had the best of intentions.» Whenever this sentence is uttered it is a sure-fire sign that something went extremely wrong. This also holds true for On the Rim of the Sky, the story of a Chinese village school, which was literally inundated with good intentions.

The village of Gulu in the province of Sichuan is shielded from the outside world by precipitous cliffs. A short while ago a path that is at least suitable for a mule was carved into the rock. Before that, anybody who wanted to access or leave the village had to climb long «stairways to heaven» or lower themselves down on lianas. In this place without roads or electricity, sandwiched between sunflowers and low clouds, probably the world’s most remote primary school is located. Since 1982 it has been headed by Teacher Shen. As he only completed secondary education, to his sorrow Shen has never advanced beyond the uncertain position of assistant teacher or the meagre salary of 720 Yuan (approx. 100 Swiss Francs). Following the 2008 earthquakes, this school on the rim of the sky was unexpectedly propelled into the spotlight of the media. The news coverage was followed by donations (from, amongst others, Jackie Chan) and volunteers started flooding in. Young people like Bao, fresh from university and full of enthusiasm for the «wonderful life» close to nature and the «purity» of the children – whom he then enables to watch TV, powered by generators. Soon the cracks appear in the perfect picture of the «small, graceful utopia». They form with particular certainty as soon as money is involved.

Suspicion arises between the marginalised Shen and Bao, who admires Che Guevara. The conflict on how to use the donations divides the village. Finally, the authorities decide to interfere, too. Director Xu Hongjie creates a compelling personal drama from the material she filmed over a long period of time. At the same time, On the Rim of the Sky can be seen as a case study about the contradictory effects of modernisation and as a tragicomic tale of the ambivalence of mindless activism. At one point during a semi-official ceremony (with flag and oversized cheque and all) in a solemn speech, a better future is invoked. None of the protagonists suspect at this moment that these words will soon resonate with bitter irony. Shortly after, the film will make it apparent. One could not have imagined a more subtle punch line.
